The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 176
bälya-bhäve mahämatta nityänanda-räya madyapera saìge hatha kahena lïläya
Intoxicated in the mood of a child, Lord Nityananda spoke to the drunkards as His pastime.

TEXT 177
'uddhäriba dui-jana'—hena ache mane ataeva niçäya äilä sei sthäne
He had already decided, "I will deliver these two." That is why He came there that night.

TEXT 178
'avadhüta' näma çuni' mädhäi hupiyä märila prabhura sire mutahé tuliyä
On hearing the name "Avadhüta," Mädhäi became angry. He picked up a clay pot and hit the Lord's head.

The word mutakï means "broken clay pot."

TEXT 179
phutila mutakï sire,—rakta pade dhäre nityånanda-mahåprabhu 'govinda' saìare
The broken clay pot cut the Lord's head and blood flowed from the wound, yet Lord Nityänanda simply remembered Govinda.

TEXT 180
dayä haila jagäira rakta dekhi' mäthe ära-bära märite dharìla tära hate
On seeing the blood, Jagäi felt compassionate and grabbed the hand of Mädhäi when he prepared to strike the Lord again.

TEXT 181
"kene hena karile nirdaya tumi drdha desäntarï märiyä ki haibä tumi bada?
"Why did you do that? You are very cruel. What will you gain by beating a outsider?
The word desäntarï means "a person from another province."

TEXT 182
eda eda avadhüte, nä märiha ära sannyäsï märiyä hon bhäla vä tomära?"
"Leave Avadhüta alone. Do not beat Him again. What will you gain by beating a sannyäsï?"

TEXT 183-189
äthevyathe lohe giyä prabhure kahilä sangopäìge tata-ksane thäkura äilä
nityänandera aìge saba rakta vahe dhäre häse nityänanda sei du'yera bhitare

rakta dekhi' krodhe prabhu bähya nähijäne 'cakra, cakra, cakra'—prabhu däke ghane ghane
äthevyathe cakra äsï upasanna hailä jagäi mädhäi tähä nayane dekhila
pramäda ganilä saba bhägavata-gana äthevyathe nityananda kare nivedana
"mädhäi märite prabhu räkhila jagäi daive se padila rakta, duhkha nähi päi

more bhiksä deha' prabhu, e dui saréra N    hichu duhkha nähi mora—tumi hao sthira"
Some people quickly went and informed the Lord, who imme- diately came there with His associates. The entire body of Nityananda was covered with blood, yet Nityananda smiled as He stood there between the two. When the Lord saw the blood, He lost external consciousness out of anger and repeatedly called out, "Cakral Cakral Cakral" The Sudarçana cakra immediately ap- peared there and was seen by Jagäi and Mädhäi. All the Lord's devotees became bewildered, but Nityananda immediately ap- pealed to the Lord as follows: "When Mädhäi hit Me, Jagäi saved Me. By providence blood came out, yet I felt no pain. O Lord, give Me these two in charity. You may be pacified, for I feel no pain."
On hearing the news that Mädhäi had injured Çré Nityananda, Çré Gaurasundara came to that spot and invoked the Sudarçana cakra. The two drunkards became extremely frightened on seeing the Sudarçana cakra. Çré Nityananda then said to Mahäprabhu, "I did not feel much trouble due to bloodshed. When Mädhäi attacked Me, Jagäi protected Me. Nevertheless, by chance blood came out. They are not at fault. There is no use to retaliate on the bodies of these two rogues. You may be peaceful, and give Me their two bodies in charity."

TEXT 190-192
jagäi räkhila',—hena vacana çuniyä jagäyere älirigilä prabhu sukhé haiyä

jagäyere bale,—"hrsna krpä ham tore nityänanda rähhiyä kinili tuìi more
ye abhésta citte dekha,—tähä tumi mäga' äji haite hau tora prema-bhakti-läbha"
On hearing the words, "Jagäi protected Me," the Lord became happy and embraced Jagäi. He said to Jagäi, "May Krsna bestow mercy on you. By protecting Nityänanda, you have purchased Me. Ask Me for any benediction you desire. May you attain pure devotional service from this day on."
After hearing from Nityänanda Prabhu that He was saved by Jagäi from Mädhäi's attack, Lord Gaurasundara, who is affectionate to His devotees, lovingly embraced Jagäi and said, "By protecting Nityänanda from attack, you have purchased Me. May you attain pure devotional service to Krsna by My blessings."

TEXT 193
jagäyere vara çuni' vaisnava-mandala 'jaya jaya' hari-dhvani karìlä sakala
On hearing the benediction awarded to Jagäi, all the Vaisnavas chanted, "Jaya! Jaya! Hari! Hari!"

TEXT 194
'prema-bhakti hau' karï yakhana balilä takhani jagäi preme mürcchita hailä
As soon as the Lord said, "May you attain pure devotional service," Jagài immediately lost consciousness due to ecstatic love.

TEXT 195
prabhu bale,—"jagäi, uthiyä dekha more satya ami prema-bhakti däna dila tore"
The Lord said, "O Jagäi, get up and see Me. I have indeed awarded you pure devotional service."

caturbhuja çaìkha-cakra-gadå-padma-dhara jagäi dekhila sei prabhu viçvambhara
Jagäi saw Viçvambhara having four arms and holding conch, disc, club, and lotus.

TEXT 197
dehhiyä mürcchita haìä padila jagäi vahse çré-carana dilä caitanya-gosäìi
Seeing this, Jagäi fell unconscious to the ground. Lord Çré Caitanya then placed His lotus foot on Jagäi's chest.

TEXT 198
päiyä carana-dhana laksmìra jévana dharila jagäi—yena amülya ratana
Receiving the treasure of the Lord's lotus feet, which are the life and soul of Laksmé, Jagäi held them tightly as if they were invaluable jewels.

TEXT 199
carane dhariyä käìde suhrti jagäi e-mata apürva kare gauräìga-gosäìi
The fortunate Jagäi shed tears as he held the Lord's feet. Such are the wonderful pastimes of Lord Gauränga.

TEXT 200
eka jéva, dui deha—jagäi-mädhäi eka punya, eka papa, vaise eka thäìi
Jagäi and Mädhäi were like one soul with two bodies, yet here one was pious and one was sinful.
In the mutual exchange between Jagäi and Mädhäi, sometimes on the pretext of pious activity one would caution the other from

committing sinful activities, and at other times when the former would engage in sinful activities the latter would caution him. Therefore they were both rascals. On seeing Jagäi's reward, the heart of Mädhäi was transformed.
