Chapter Thirteen

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 378
dekhite nä päya ihä keha äjìä vine sei prabhu-anugrahe bale käro sthäne
Without the Lord's sanction, no one could see them. Only one who is favored by the Lord can speak to others about this.
TEXT 379
kona dina vasiyä thäkaye viçvambhara sammukhe äilä mätra kona anucara
One day, as Viçvambhara was sitting there, some of His as- sociates came before Him.
TEXT 380
'oikhäne thäka'—prabhu balaye äpane cäri-päìca-mukha-gulä lotåya aìgane
The Lord told them, "Wait there," while four-headed and five- headed personalities rolled on the ground in the courtyard.
TEXT 381
padiyä ächaye yata—nähi lekhäjokhä "tomarä sabere ki e-gulä nä deya dekhä?"

No one could estimate how many personalities were there. "Don't you recognize these persons?"

The word lekhäjokhä means "number and quantity."

TEXT 382
kara-yoda kari' bale saba bhakta-gana "tribhuvane kare prabhu tomära sevana
All the devotees replied to the Lord with folded hands, "O Lord, the inhabitants of the three worlds serve You.

TEXT 383
ämarä-sabära kon çakti dehhibära? vine prabhu, tumi due drsti adhihära"
"What power do we have to see? Only You can give us the ability to see."

TEXT 384
e saba adbhuta caitanyera gupta-hathä sarva siddhi haya,—ihä çunile sarvathä
These confidential pastimes of Lord Caitanya are most wonderful. If one hears them, he achieves all perfection.

TEXT 385
ïhäte sandeha kichu nä bhävïha mane aja-bhava niti äise gauräìgera sthäne
Do not maintain any doubts. Lord Brahma and Lord Çiva would daily come to see Gauränga.

TEXT 386
hena-mate jagäi-mädhäi-pariträna karìlä çì-gauracandra jagatera präna

In this way Çré Gauracandra, the life and soul of the universe, delivered Jagäi and Mädhäi.

TEXT 387
sabära karïba gauracandra se uddhära vyatirìhta vaisnava-nindaha duräcära

Gauracandra will deliver everyone except those sinful persons who blaspheme Vaisnavas.

TEXT 388
çülapäni-sama yadi bhahta-nindä hare bhägavata-pramäna—tathäpiha çïghra mare

According to the Çrémad Bhägavatam (5.10.25), even if some- one on the level of Lord Çiva blasphemes a devotee, he will soon be destroyed.

TEXT 389
mahad-vimänät sva-hrtäd dhi mädné naìksyaty adüräd api çédapänih

"Because of this, even though I may be as strong as Lord Çiva, I shall be vanquished without delay due to my offense at the lotus feet of a Vaisnava."

TEXT 390
hena vaisnava ninde yadi sarvajìa hai se janera adhahpäta—sarva çästre hai

In all scriptures it is stated that if an all-knowing person blasphemes a Vaisnava, he will certainly fall down.
Even after achieving all perfection, a person who criticizes a Vaisnava certainly falls down. This is the verdict of all scriptures.

sarva-mahä-präyaçcita ye krsnera näma vaisnaväparädhe seha nä müaye träna
Krsna's name, which is the ultimate atonement, does not deliver one who offends a Vaisnava.
The holy names of the Lord have more power for destroying sinful reactions than all other kinds of atonement mentioned in the smrtis. But if a person commits an offense against a devotee of Hari who is engaged in chanting those holy names, then he can never be delivered. Among the offenses against the chanting of the holy names, blasphemy of sadhus is the first. If one commits offenses against the holy names, he cannot possibly attain nämäbhäsa (a glimpse of offenseless chanting) or the fruits of chanting the holy names.
TEXT 392
padma-puränera ei parama vacana prema-bhakti haya ihä karìle pälana
One who honors the following confidential words of the Padma Puräna will attain ecstatic love of God.

TEXT 393
satäm nindä nämnah paramam aparädham vitanute yatah khyätim yätam katham u sahate tad-vigarhäm
"To blaspheme the great saintly persons who are preaching the glories of the Hare Krsna mahä-mantra is the worst offense at the lotus feet of the holy name. The Näma-prabhu, who is identical with Krsna, will never tolerate such blasphemous activities, even from one who passes as a great devotee."

TEXT 394
yei çune ei mahå-dasyura uddhära tare uddhäìba gauracandra-avatära

One who hears this narration regarding the deliverance of the two rogues will be delivered by Çré Gauracandra.

TEXT 395
brahma-daitya-tärana gauräìga jaya jaya karunä-sägara prabhu parama saàaya

All glories to Gauränga, who delivered the two brähmana demons! O Lord, You are an ocean of mercy and the most compas- sionate.
Since Çréman Mahäprabhu delivered Jagäi and Mädhäi, He be- came known as Brahma-daitya-tärana, the deliverer of the brähmana demons. Although Jagäi and Mädhäi were born in a brähmana fami- ly, they were addressed as "demons" due to their aversion to the Lord.

TEXT 396
sahasra karunä-sindhu mahä-krpämaya dosa nähi dekhe prabhu—guna-mätra laya

The Lord's supreme mercy is as vast as a thousand oceans. He sees the good qualities of others and never finds fault in them.

TEXT 397
hena-prabhu-virahe ye päpi-präna rahe sabe paramäyu-guna,—ära kichu nahe

A sinful life devoid of the association of such a Lord has no benefit other than its long duration.
Mahäprabhu is most merciful and sees no faults in others. He is not even slightly offended by one's offenses. The life of a sinful person who maintains his life devoid of the service of that Mahäprabhu is useless; he continues his life simply due to his past karma. But such an existence is never praiseworthy.

tathäpiha ei krpä kara mahäçaya çravane vadane yena tora yaça laya
0 Lord, please bestow Your mercy on me so that I may hear and chant Your glories.

TEXT 399
ämära prabhura prabhu gauräìga-sundara yathä vaise tathä yena haìa anucara
May I reside as the servant of Çré Gaurasundara, the Lord of my Lord, wherever He may be.
Çrìman Mahäprabhu is the worshipable Lord of my spiritual master. It is my desire that I may become Their servant, birth after birth.

TEXT 400
caitanya-kathära ädi antya nähi jäni ye-te-mate caitanyera yaçah se väkhäni
There is neither a beginning or end to the topics regarding Lord Caitanya, yet somehow or other I am narrating His glories.

TEXT 401
gana-saha prabhu-päda-padme namaskära ithe aparädha kichu nahuka ämära
I offer my obeisances at the feet of the Lord and His associates, so that I may not offend them.

TEXT 402
çré krsna-caitanya nityänanda-cända jäna vrndävana-däsa tachu pada-yuge gäna
Accepting Çré Caitanya and Nityananda Prabhu as my life and soul, I, Vrndävana däsa, sing the glories of Their lotus feet.

Chapter Thirteen

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 351
ära-bära nityananda sambhrama päiyä dilena nay one jala nirghäta kariyä
With renewed enthusiasm Nityananda forcefully splashed water in Advaita's eyes.
TEXT 352
advaita pàiyä duhkha bale,—"mätäliyä sannyäsé nä haya kabhu brähmana vadhiyä
Advaita became distressed and said, "You are intoxicated. You can never become a sannyäsé by killing a brähmana.
When Nityananda forcefully splashed water, Advaita Prabhu was hurt and said, "You certainly cannot become a sannyäsé by killing a brähmana out of intoxication."
TEXT 353
paçcimära ghare ghare fehäiyäche bhäta kula, janma, jäti keha näjäne kothä'ta
"You have eaten in the houses of people from the west. No one knows about Your family, birth, or caste.

Those who are particularly proud of their country certainly speak harshly about foreigners. People of the east condemn the people of the west as paçcimä, or westerners. They criticize them by calling them low-born. No one knew what family, what class, or what place Nityänanda hailed from. He would wander about, eating in the houses of westerners.

TEXT 354
pita, mätå, guru,—nähi jäni ye hi-rüpa? hhäya, pare sakala, balåya 'avadhüta'"

"No one knows about Your father, mother, or spiritual master. You eat everything, wear everything, and advertise Yourself as an avadhüta."
"We have no information about Your father, mother, or what kind of spiritual master You have accepted. You are passing as an avadhüta and accepting food and charity from anyone and everyone."

TEXT 355
nityänanda-prati stava kare vyapadeçe çunï nityänanda-prabhu gana-saha häse

As Advaita indirectly glorified Nityänanda on the pretext of criticizing Him, Nityänanda Prabhu and His associates laughed.
The statements of Advaita are deceiving. They are indicative of Çré Nityänanda's glories. On hearing the words of Çré Advaita, Nityänanda Prabhu and His followers began to laugh.

TEXT 356
"samhärimu sakala, mohära dosa näi" eta balï krodhe jvale äcärya-gosäìi

Äcärya Gosäìi burned with anger as He exlaimed, "It will not be My fault when I destroy everyone."

äcäryera krodhe häse bhägavata-gana krodhe tattva kahe—yena çuni' kuvacana
Seeing Advaita Äcärya's anger, all the devotees laughed. In anger He actually spoke the truth, which appeared as harsh words.

TEXT 358
hena rasa-kalahera marma nä bujhiyä bhinna-jìäne ninde, \ande, se mare pudiyä
Without understanding the purport of such loving quarrels, if someone considering Them different from each other criticizes one and glorifies the other, he will be burned to death.
Those foolish people who cannot enter into the loving quarrels of Advaita and Nityananda criticize one and glorify the other, and as a result they are burned to death in the forest fire of offense.

TEXT 359
nityänanda-gauracäìda yåre krpä kare sei se vaisnava-väkya bujhibäre pare
Only one who is favored by Nityananda and Gauracandra can understand the words of the Vaisnavas.

TEXT 360
sei kata-ksane dui mahähutühali nityänanda-advaite haila holähuli
After Nityananda and Advaita engaged in ecstatic pastimes for some time, They embraced each other.

TEXT 361
mahä-matta dui prabhu gauracandra-rase sakala gaìgära måjhe nityananda bhäse

The two Prabhus were greatly intoxicated with the mellows of love for Gauracandra. Thereafter Nityänanda floated around in the waters of the Ganges.

TEXT 362
hena-mate jala-keli kértcmera çese pratirätrì sabä laìå kare prabhu rase
In this way the Lord and His associates engaged every night in water sports after kïrtana.

TEXT 363
e lélä dekhite manusyera sàkti näi sabe dekhe deva-gana sangope tathäi
Human beings have no power to see such pastimes, but the demigods secretly watched them.

TEXT 364
sarva-gane gauracandra gaìgä-snäna karï küle uthï ucca karì' bale 'hari hari'
After taking bath in the Ganges, Gauracandra and His as- sociates came out of the water and loudly chant the names of Hari.

TEXT 365
sabäre dilena mälä-prasäda-candana vidäya hailä sabe karite bhojana
Thereafter the Lord gave everyone garlands and sandalwood paste that had been offered, and then they took leave and went to eat.

TEXT 366
jagäi-mädhäi samarpila sabä'-sthäne äpana galära mälå dila dui-jane

The Lord entrusted Jagäi and Mädhäi to the devotees and then offered His own garlands to the two.

TEXT 367
e saba lllära kabhu avadhi nä haya 'ävirbhäva', 'tirobhäva' mätra vede kaya
Although the Vedas describe their "appearance" and "disap- pearance," these pastimes have no beginning and no end.

TEXT 368
grhe äsï prabhu dhuilena çrï-carana tulasìra karüena carana-vandana
After returning home, the Lord washed His feet and offered obeisances to tulasï.

TEXT 369
bhojana karite vasilena viçvambhara naivedyänna änï mäye karilä gocara
Thereafter Viçvambhara sat down to eat, and mother Çacé brought the offered foods before Him.

TEXT 370
sarva-bhägavatere kariyä nivedana ananta brahmända-nätha karena bhojana
The Lord of unlimited universes offered prayers to all the devotees and then began to eat.

TEXT 371
parama santose mahäprasäda päiyä mukha-çuddhi kari' dväre vasilä äsiyä
After honoring the mahä-prasäda with great satisfaction, the Lord purified His mouth and sat down in the doorway.

vadhü-saìge dekhe äi nayana bhariyä mahänanda-sägare çarïra dubäiyä
As mother Çacé and her daughter-in-law saw these pastimes of the Lord to the full satisfaction of their eyes, they floated in an ocean of bliss.

TEXT 373
äira bhägyera sémä fee balite pare? sahasra-vadana-prabhu, yadi çafeti dhare
Who can describe the limit of mother Çacé's good fortune? Only the thousand-headed Lord is able, if He is empowered.

TEXT 374
präkrta-çabde o yebä balibefea 'äi' 'äi' çabda-prabhäve o tära duhkha näi

Even if one utters the word äi as a mundane word, by the influence of the word äi one will be freed from all suffering.
The word äi is derived from the Sanskrit word Äryä. Those who call Çré Gaurasundara's mother "Äi" will be freed from all miseries.

TEXT 375
putrera çré-mufeha defehi' äi jagan-mätä nija-deha äi nähi jäne ache kothä

On seeing the lotus face of her son, Çacé, the mother of the universe, forgot where she was.
While seeing the lotus face of Çré Gaurasundara, mother Çacé forgot herself. Being bewildered by the beauty of the Lord's face, she even forgot her motherly sentiments and her parental affection for her son.

viçvambhara calilena karite çayana takhana vidäya haya gupte deva-gana
When Viçvambhara went to sleep, the demigods would secret- ly take leave.
TEXT 377
caturmukha, paìcamukha-ädi deva-gana niti äsï caitanyera karaye sevana
The demigods headed by the four-headed Brahmä and the five-headed Çiva would daily come to serve Lord Caitanya.

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 326
e dui-janere ye karìba paìhäsa
e du'yera aparädhe tära sarva-näça"

"If anyone ridicules these two, he will be ruined as a result of that offense."
Considering their previous sinful activities according to nagna- mätrka-nyäya1, those who in the future consider Jagäi and Mädhäi sinful commit offenses at their feet and bring about their own ruination. In this regard one should discuss the two verses: na präkrtatvam iha bhakta janasya paçyet and apt cet su-duräcäro2.

TEXT 327
suniyä vaisnava-gana kände mahäpreme jagäi-mädhäi-prati kare paranäme
On hearing the Lord's words, the Vaisnavas cried in ecstatic love. Then they all offered obeisances to Jagäi and Mädhäi.

TEXT 328
prabhu bale,—"çuna saba bhägavata-gana cala sabe yäi bhåglrathïra carana"
The Lord then said, "Listen, devotees. Let us all go to the Ganges."

TEXT 329
sarva-gana-sahita thäkura viçvambhara padilä jähnavì-jale vana-mälä-dhara
Accompanied by His associates and wearing a garland of forest flowers, Lord Viçvambhara entered the waters of the Ganges.
1.       This logic states that because one's mother was naked in her childhood, she should continue to remain naked, even though she has become the mother of so many children.
2.       See page 172 for a translation of the first verse and page 338 for a translation of the second.
The phrase vana-mälä-dhara refers to Çré Krsna or Çréman Mahäprabhu.

kértana-änande yata bhägavata-gana çiçu-präya caìcaïa-caritra sarva-ksana
Due to the ecstasy of kirtana, all the devotees constantly be- haved like restless young boys.

TEXT 331
mahäbhavya vrddha saba—seha çiçu-mati ei-mata haya visnu-bhaktira sakati
Although they were all greatly learned and mature, they be- haved like young boys. This is the potency of devotional service to Visnu.
The word mahäbhavya means "endowed with the finest eti- quette," "having the qualities required to live in a society of cultured persons," or "civilized or sober."
TEXT 332
gaìgä-snäna-mahotsave kirtanera çese prabhu-bhrtya-buddhi gela änanda-äveçe
In the festival of taking bath in the Ganges after kirtana, everyone was so overwhelmed with ecstasy that they forgot who was the Lord and who were the servants.

TEXT 333
jala deya prabhu sarva-vaisnavera gäya heha nähi pare—sabe häriyä paläya
When the Lord splashed water on the Vaisnavas, no one could compete with Him. They all retreated in defeat.
TEXT 334
jala-yuddha hare prabhu yära yära saìge kata-ksana yuddha kari' sabe deya bhaìge

Everyone who engaged in water fights with the Lord retreated after fighting for some time.

TEXT 335
ksane keli advaita-gauräìga-nityänande ksane keli haridäsa-çréväsa-muhunde
Sometimes Advaita, Gauräriga, and Nityänanda sported together, and sometimes Haridäsa, Çréväsa, and Mukunda sported.

TEXT 336-339
çrégarbha, çré-sadäçiva, muräri, çrémän purusottama, mukunda, saìjaya, buddhimanta-khän
vidyänidhi, gaìgädäsa, jagadéça näma gopïnätha, haridäsa, garuda, çriräma

ananta caitanya-bhrtya—katajäni näma vedavyäsa haite vyakta haiba puräna
Among the innumerable servants of Lord Caitanya present there were Çrégarbha, Çré Sadäçiva, Muräri Gupta, Çrémän, Purusottama, Mukunda, Saìjaya, Buddhimanta Khän, Pundaréka Vidyänidhi, Gaìgädäsa, Jagadéça, Gopénätha, Haridäsa, Garuda, Çréräma, Govinda, Çrédhara, Krsnänanda, Käçéçvara, Jagadänanda, Govindänanda, and Çrï Çuklämbara. Many others whose names I do not know will in the future be revealed in the Puränas by Vedavyäsa.
The number of Çrï Caitanyadeva's servants is innumerable. Çré Krsna Dvaipäyana-vyäsadeva will record the names of Lord Caitanya's servants in traditional literatures like the Puränas.

TEXT 340
anyo'nye sarva-jana jala-heli hare paränanda-rase heha jine, heha hare

They all sported in the waters with one another. In the mel- lows of ecstatic love, some conquered and some were defeated.

TEXT 341
gadädhara-gauräìge miliyä jala-keli nityånanda-advaite khelaye doìhe milï

Gadädhara and Gauräìga engaged in water sports together. Nityananda and Advaita also sported in the water together.

TEXT 342
advaita-nayane nityananda kutühalì nirghäte märìyäjala dila mahäbali

The powerful Nityananda sportingly splashed water with great force into the eyes of Advaita.

TEXT 343
dui cah.su advaita melite nähi pare mahä-krodhäveçe prabhu gälägäli päde
Advaita could not open His eyes, so in great anger He abused Nityananda.

TEXT 344
"nityänanda-madyape karila caksu käna kothä haite madyapera haila upasthäna
"This drunken Nityananda has made Me blind and deaf. From where has this drunkard come?
Since Çré Nityananda Prabhu splashed water in the eyes of Sri Advaita Prabhu, Çré Advaita Prabhu addressed Nityananda as "drunkard" and on the pretext of a loving quarrel said, "From where has this drunkard come? This fellow has obstructed My power of vision and made Me blind."

çréniväsa panditera mule jäti näi kothäkära avadhüte änï dila thäìi
"Çréväsa Pandita does not belong to any caste. He brought this Avadhüta from somewhere and gave Him a place to stay.
"Çréniväsa Pandita has brought Avadhùta Çré Nityänanda and awarded Him the qualification to freely mix with us. But we do not know His previous identity. One should not allow this whimsical avadhùta, who is devoid of family prestige and aristocracy, to con- stantly remain with Mahäprabhu."

TEXT 346
çacéra nandana corä eta karma hare niravadhi avadhüta-sarhhati vihare"
"The stealthy son of Çacé can do so much, yet He constantly enjoys the company of this avadhüta.'"

TEXT 347
nityänanda hale,—"mukhe nähi väsa läja härile äpane—ära kandale ki käja?"
Nityänanda replied, "Don't You feel embarrassed to speak like this? You have been defeated, so what is the use of quarreling?"
Çré Nityänanda Prabhu said to Çré Advaita, "You have been defeated in the water fight, yet You do not feel ashamed. Moreover You approach Me to quarrel with Your head held high."

TEXT 348
gauracandra bale,—"eka-bäre nähijäni tina-bära haile se hära-jita mäni"
Gauracandra said, "One time doesn't count. Winning and losing is decided after three fights."

ära-bära jala-yuddha advaita-nitäi hautuka lägiyä eka-deha—dui thäìi
Advaita and Nitäi again engaged in water fighting. They are one, but for the purpose of sporting They have become two.
TEXT 350
dui-jane jala-yuddha—heha nähi pare eka-bärajine keha, ära bar a hare
In Their water fight, neither could defeat the other. One time one conquered, and the next time He was defeated.

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 301
advaita-pratibhå çunï häse viçvambhara 'hari' balï dhvani kare saba-anucara
On hearing Advaita's comment, Viçvambhara smiled and all the devotees chanted the name of Hari.

TEXT 302
prabhu bale,—"kälä dekha duira pätake kïrtana karaha—saba yäuka nindake"
The Lord said, "See how these two sinners are black. Perform kértana so that their sins take shelter in those who blaspheme."
Mahäprabhu said, "The forms of Jagäi's and Mädhäi's sinful reac- tions are black. All of you perform kértana, then these black sinful reactions will take shelter in those who blaspheme the devotees, and Jagäi and Mädhäi will be delivered from their sins."

TEXT 303
çuniyä prabhura våkya sabära ulläsa mahänande haila kértana-parakäça
Hearing the Lord's words, everyone became jubilant. They then began to perform kértana in ecstasy.

TEXT 304
näce prabhu viçvambhara nityänanda-saìge vediyä vaisnava saba yaçah gäya range
Lord Viçvambhara danced with Nityänanda, and all the Vaisnavas surrounded Them and sang the glories of the Lord.

nåcaye advaita—yära lägï avatära yähära kärane haila jagata-uddhära
Advaita also danced. He had induced the Lord to incarnate and thus delivered the entire world.

TEXT 306
kïrtana karaye sabe diyä karatäli sabäi karena nrtya haye Jeutühalé
As they performed kértana, everyone clapped their hands and danced jubilantly.

TEXT 307
prabhu-prati mahänande käro nähi bhaya prabhu-saìge kata laksa thelätheli haya
They felt no fear as they bumped into the Lord thousands of times in their ecstasy.

TEXT 308
vadhü-saìge dekhe äi gharera bhitare vasiyä bhäsaye äi änanda-sägare
Mother Çacé and her daughter-in-law floated in an ocean of ecstasy as they watched everything from within the house.
From within the house, mother Çacé and Çré Visnupriyä saw the Lord's pastimes of delivering Jagäi and Mädhäi. As a result they became absorbed in ecstasy.

TEXT 309
sabei paramänanda dekhiyå prakäça kähäro nä ghuce krsnäveçera ulläsa
Everyone was filled with ecstasy after seeing this pastime. Their ecstatic love for Krsna was uninterrupted.

yära aìga parasite ramä bhaya päya se prabhura aìga-saìge madyapa näcaya
The two drunkards danced in the association of He whose body the goddess of fortune is afraid to touch.

TEXT 311
madyapere uddhärilä caitanya-gosäìi vaisnava-nindake humbhïpäke dilä thäìi
In this way Lord Caitanya delivered the two drunkards and sent the blasphemers of the Vaisnavas to the hell known as Kumbhìpäka.

TEXT 312
nindäya nä bade dharma—sabe papa läbha etehe nä hare nindä saba mahäbhäga
Blasphemy does not enhance one's religious principles, it only results in sin. That is why fortunate souls do not engage in blasphemy.
The devotees of the Lord do not blaspheme anyone in this world. One who blasphemes others is known as "sinful" or "irreligious." To attribute on someone faults that are not present is called blasphemy. Being induced by irrelevant goals, those who are unable to tolerate the glorification of others and with a desire to attack them unfairly attribute faults on them continually meet with inauspiciousness day after day. A person who out of envy attributes faults on an ir- reproachable Vaisnava must go to the hell known as Kumbhïpäka and suffer severe miseries. Those sinful persons who cannot under- stand that sarva-mahäguna-gana vaisnava-çarére—"all good qualities are present in the body of a Vaisnava," and who consider that non-Vaisnavas are equal to Vaisnavas can never achieve any benefit. To criticize the behavior of nondevotees is called sad-upadeça, or good instruction. Other than devotional service to Visnu, all ac- tivities of the living entities are condemnable. Sinful people often

engage in abominable activities on the pretext of devotional service to Visnu. Instructions to give up these activities should not be called nindä, or blasphemy.

TEXT 313
dui dasyu dui mahäbhägavata kari' ganera sahita näce gauräìga-çré-harì
After transforming the two rogues into mahä-bhägavatas, Çré Gaurahari danced along with His associates.

TEXT 314
nrtyäveçe vasïlä thäkura viçvambhara vasüä caudihe vedï vaisnava-mandala
Overwhelmed from dancing, Lord Viçvambhara sat down, and all the Vaisnavas sat around Him.

TEXT 315-316
sarva-aìge dhülä cäì-aìguli-pramäna tathäpi sabära aìga 'nirmala' gey äna

Their bodies were covered with two inches of dust, yet they were all filled with pure knowledge. Lord Gaurasundara regained His former state, smiled, and spoke to everyone there.
Although those Vaisnavas who sat around Çréman Mahäprabhu were covered with two inches of dust and externally appeared dirty, all of them were all-knowing and topmost scholars without con- tamination.

"Do not consider these two as sinners, for I have personally burned their sinful reactions to ashes.

"In the bodies of all living entities, it is I who makes them act, speak, move, and eat. When I leave a body, it dies.
When the living entity attains spiritual knowledge he no longer maintains the three types of false ego. The living entity then sur- renders at the lotus feet of the Lord and becomes liberated. In the Caitanya-caìtämrta (Antya 4.192-193) it is stated:
dlksä-käle bhakta kare ätma-samarpana sei-käle krsna tare kare ätma-sama
sei deha kare tära cid-änanda-maya apräkrta-déhe täìra carana bhajaya
"At the time of initiation, when a devotee fully surrenders unto the service of the Lord, Krsna accepts him to be as good as Himself. When the devotee's body is thus transformed into spiritual exist- ence, the devotee, in that transcendental body, renders service to the lotus feet of the Lord." After Çré Gaurasundara accepted the bodies of Jagäi and Mädhäi to be as good as His own, whatever He had them do, whatever He had them speak, however He had them behave, and whatever He had them eat was favorable for the service of Visnu. In this way, after turning one towards the Lord's service, the worshi- pable Lord takes His worshiper servant, who leaves a body made of the five gross elements within the material world, and departs.

TEXT 319
yei dehe alpa duhkhe jïva däka chäde muìi vinä sei deha padile nä nade
"The living entity cries out if he feels a little distress, but if I am not present in that body it will not even move when burned.

When a conditioned soul feels a little distress, he shouts loudly because of impatience. When the Lord and the devotee leave a body, it does not react even if it is burned with fire. The Lord is transcen- dental and has supreme consciousness, while the living entity is a fragmental spiritual particle. As long as one does not have the propensity for transcendental service due to the absence of Krsna consciousness, one becomes controlled by three types of false ego and continues to display independence. The proper use of inde- pendence is to become inclined towards the service of the Lord, but the senses of persons who are averse to the Lord's service are induced by three types of false ego to engage in pious and impious activities and more or less identify with material nature.

TEXT 320
tabe yejévera duhkha—kare ahaìkära 'muìi karoì, baloì' balï päya mahä-mära
"But the living entity's distress is due to false ego. He suffers miseries because he claims, T am the doer. I am the speaker.'
Since the living entity who has become averse to the Lord con- siders himself a product of and belonging to material nature, the three types of false ego immerse him in an ocean of distress. He then becomes afflicted with the threefold material miseries and proudly considers, "I am the doer. 1 am the enjoyer."

TEXT 321

"Therefore the activities done by these two were actually done by Me, and I have released them from the reactions.
"Jagäi and Mädhäi were intoxicated with false prestige, and they misused their independence. I have personally destroyed their mis- fortune; in other words, I have delivered them from the misconceptions of T have done, I have said,' which were produced from the misuse of their independence."

"If you really belong to Me, then listen to My order. Whatever you faithfully give these two to eat will be equal to offering with love to Krsna's mouth all the honey available in innumerable
universes.

TEXT 325
e du'yera vata mätra dibe yei jana
tära se krsnera mukhe madhu-samarpana
"Anyone who gives these two a small portion of food gives honey to the mouth of Krsna.
The Lord relishes foodstuffs through the mouths of His devotees. The devotees do not enjoy any material object like nondevotees do. Since the devotees offer everything to the Lord and constantly remain engaged in the service of accepting His remnants, if someone gives a small portion of food to a devotee of the Lord, then it amounts to offering sweetmeats to Çré Krsna. In this regard one should discuss the commentary on verse 228 of this chapter.

"The great devotee Gajendra offered You prayers, and You delivered him because he was fully surrendered.
In the valley of Triküta Mountain there is an attractive lake in Varuna's Rtumat garden. Once when Gajendra came there with some female elephants and became maddened by sporting in the

water, a powerful crocodile attacked his feet. Gajendra fought with that crocodile for one thousand years, yet he could not get free from his grip. When Gajendra's strength gradually diminished and he could not find any other means, he began to offer the Indradumna- stotra to Çré Hari, who then appeared there and, after cutting the head of that crocodile with His disc, He delivered Gajendra. In order to demonstrate that there were no more sins remain- ing in the bodies of those two, the Lord's body turned blackish.
Since all the sinful reactions of Jagäi and Mädhäi took shelter in the body of Mahäprabhu, His body turned black. Advaita Prabhu said, "Gaurasundara is looking exactly like Çré Gokulacandra."

TEXT 300
