TEXT 277
tomäre dehhiyä nija-jévana chädilä tabe kon mahäjane tare paraçilä
"They left their bodies while seeing You, yet which great soul cared to touch them?

TEXT 278
ämäre paraçe ebe bhägavata-gane chäyä chuìï yei jana hailä gaìgä-snåne
"The pure devotees who once took bath in the Ganges after touching our shadow are now touching us.
"Those pure devotees who used to take bath in the Ganges to free themselves from the sinful reaction of touching our shadow are now touching us."

TEXT 279
sarva-mate prabhu, tora e mahimä bada kähare bhändiba? sabe jänileha dadha
"O Lord, this is certainly due to Your extraordinary glories. Who can be deceived now? Everyone is convinced.

TEXT 280
mahåbhakta gajaräja karila stavana ekänta çarana dekhi' karilä mocana
"The great devotee Gajendra offered You prayers, and You delivered him because he was fully surrendered.
In the valley of Triküta Mountain there is an attractive lake in Varuna's Rtumat garden. Once when Gajendra came there with some female elephants and became maddened by sporting in the

water, a powerful crocodile attacked his feet. Gajendra fought with that crocodile for one thousand years, yet he could not get free from his grip. When Gajendra's strength gradually diminished and he could not find any other means, he began to offer the Indradumna- stotra to Çré Hari, who then appeared there and, after cutting the head of that crocodile with His disc, He delivered Gajendra. (Çrlmad Bhägavatam, Eighth Canto, Chapters Two and Three)

TEXT 281
daive se upamä nahe asurä pütanä agha-baka-ädi yata heha nahe slmä

"That example cannot be applied to demons like Pütanä, Agha, and Baka.

TEXT 282
chädiyä se deha tärä gela divyagati veda vine tähä dehhe hähära çahati?

"Although they attained the spiritual world when they left their bodies, who had the power to see that without Vedic knowledge?

TEXT 283
ye harilä ei dui pätahi-çarïre säksäte dekhila ihä sakala samsäre

"What You have done to us two sinners, however, has been directly seen by people of the entire world.

TEXT 284
yateka karilä tumi pätaki-uddhära käro kona-rüpa laksya ache sabäkära
"The sinners that You have previously delivered all had some qualification or another.

nirlaksye tärilä brahma-daitya dui-jana tomära kärunya sabe ihära kärana"
"But now You have causelessly delivered two persons who were brähmana demons. This is only due to Your mercy."
TEXT 286
baìiyä baliyä kände jagäi-mädhäi e-mata apürva kare caitanya-gosäìi
Jagäi and Mädhäi cried as they offered these prayers. Such are the matchless pastimes of Lord Caitanya.
TEXT 287
yateka vaisnava-gana apürva dekhiyä yoda-häte stuti kare sabe dändäiyä
On seeing this matchless pastime, all the Vaisnavas stood up and offered prayers with folded hands.
TEXT 288
"ye stuti karìla prabhu e dui madyape tora krpä vino ihä jane kära bäpe
"O Lord, without Your mercy not even one's father will under- stand the prayers offered by these two drunkards.
TEXT 289
tomära acmtya sakti ke bujhite pare? yakhana ye-rüpe krpä karaha yähäre"
"Who can understand Your inconceivable energies or when, how, and on whom You bestow Your mercy?"
TEXT 290
prabhu bale,—"e dui madyapa nahe ära äji haite ei dui sevaka ämära

The Lord said, "These two are no longer drunkards. From today on, these two are My servants.

TEXT 291
sabe mile anugraha hara e du'yere janme janme ära yena ämä' nä päsare
"All of you bestow your mercy on these two, so that birth after birth they do not forget Me.

TEXT 292
ye-rüpe yähära thäìi ache aparädha ksamiyä e dui-prati karaha prasäda"
"Forgive whatever offenses they have committed against you and show compassion on them."

TEXT 293
çuniyä prabhura väkya jagäi-mädhäi sabära carana dharï padilä tathäi
Hearing the Lord's words, Jagäi and Mädhäi fell down at everyone's feet.

TEXT 294
sarva-mahäbhägavata kaila äçïrxäda jagäi-mädhäi haila niraparàdha
All the devotees blessed Jagäi and Mädhäi, who were then freed from all their offenses.

TEXT 295
prabhu bale,—"utha utha jagäi-mädhäi haila ämära däsa—ära cintä näi
The Lord said, "Get up. Get up, Jagäi and Mädhäi. Do not worry, for you are My servants.

tumi-dui yata kichu kaìle stavana parama-susatya—kichu nä haya khandana
"The prayers that you have offered are certainly true. No one can refute them.

TEXT 297
e çarire kabhu käro hena nähi haya nityänanda-prasäde sejäniha niçcaya
"What you have experienced is not possible in these bodies. Know for certain that this was simply due to Nityänanda's mercy.

TEXT 298
to'-sabära yata papa muìi niluì saba säksäte dekhaha bhäi, ei anubhava"
"I have personally taken charge of your sinful reactions. O brothers, see for yourselves."
Mahäprabhu said, "O brothers, I have accepted the sinful reac- tions of Jagäi and Mädhäi. You will all see for yourselves."

TEXT 299
dui-jana-çaìre pätaka nähi ära ihä bujhäite hailä käliyä-äkära
In order to demonstrate that there were no more sins remain- ing in the bodies of those two, the Lord's body turned blackish.
Since all the sinful reactions of Jagäi and Mädhäi took shelter in the body of Mahäprabhu, His body turned black. Advaita Prabhu said, "Gaurasundara is looking exactly like Çré Gokulacandra."

TEXT 300
prabhu bale,—"tomarä ämäre dekha kena?" advaita balaye,—"çì-gokulacandra yena"

"The Lord said, "How do I look?" Advaita replied, "You look just like Çré Gokulacandra."

Here the word hena means "how."
