Chapter Thirteen

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 201
jagäire prabhu yabe anugraha haila mådhäira citta tata-ksane bhàla haila
When the Lord bestowed mercy on Jagäi, the heart of Mädhäi was immediately rectified.

TEXT 202
äthevyathe nityänanda-vasana ediyä padila carana dharï dandavat haiyä
He quickly released Nityänanda's cloth, fell flat, and held the Lord's lotus feet.

TEXT 203
"dui-jane eha-thaìi haila prabhu papa anugraha kene prabhu hara dui bhäga?

"O Lord, we both committed sinful activities together. Why do You divide us while bestowing Your mercy?
Mädhäi said, "We have committed sinful activities together. Therefore it is not proper for You to bestow mercy on one and punish the other."

TEXT 204
more anugraha hara,—lana tora näma ämäre uddhära haribäre nähi äna"

"Bestow Your mercy on me, so that I can chant Your name. There is no one to deliver me other than You."

prabhu bale,—"tora träna nähi dekhi muìi nityänanda-aìge rakta pädili se tuìi"
mädhäi balaye,—"ihä halite nä pära äpanära dharma prabhu åpani kene chäda?
bane vindhileka tomä' ye asura-gane nija-pada tä'-sabäre tabe dile kene?"
prabhu bale,—"tähä haite tora aparädha nityånanda-aìgete karili raktapäta
ämä' haite ei nityänanda-deha bada tora sthäne ei satya kahiläma dadha"

The Lord replied, "I do not foresee your deliverance, for you have drawn blood from the body of Nityananda." Mädhäi said, "You cannot say this. Why are You forsaking Your duty? Why did You award Your lotus feet to the demons that pierced Your body with arrows?" The Lord replied, "Your offense is greater than theirs, because you have drawn blood from the body of Nityananda. The body of Nityananda is superior to Mine. I em- phatically tell you this truth."
Mahäprabhu said that since Mädhäi hit the body of Nityananda, he would not be delivered. In response to this, Mädhäi referred to topics from the pastimes of Krsna and Räma as follows: "In the past many demons have attained liberation even though they were en- vious of Visnu. But in this case, why a demon like me will not be delivered?" In this regard, Mahäprabhu said, "It is a greater offense to hit the body of Nityananda, who is the servant of Visnu, than to become envious of Visnu. To harm Çré Nityananda is more offensive than attacking the body of the Lord."

TEXT 210
"satya yadi kahilä thäkura mora sthäne balaha niskrti muìi päiba kemane?

"O Lord, if You are telling me the truth, then tell me, how will I be delivered?

TEXT 211
sarva roga näça', vaidya-cüdämani tumi tumi roga cikitsile sustha hai ami
"You destroy all disease, for You are the crest jewel of all physicians. If You treat me, then I will be cured.

TEXT 212
nä hara kapata prabhu, sarhsarera nätha vidita hailä,—ära lukäibä hä'ta?"
"O Lord of the universe, please do not deceive me. Now that You are known, how will You hide?"

The word hä'ta means "whom" or "to whom."

TEXT 213
prabhu bale,—"aparädha haile tumi bada nityänanda-carana dharìyä giyä pada"
The Lord said, "You have committed a grave offense. Go and grab hold of Nityänanda's lotus feet."

TEXT 214
päiyä prabhura äjìä mädhäi tahhana dhaìla amülya dhana nitäi-carana
Being ordered by the Lord, Mädhäi then caught hold of the invaluable treasure of Nitäi's lotus feet.

TEXT 215
ye carana dharile nä yäi kabhu näça revati jänena yei carana-prakäça

By taking refuge of those lotus feet, one is never vanquished. Revaté knows well the glories of those lotus feet.

TEXT 216
viçvambhara bale,—"çuna nityänanda-räya padila carane—krpä karite yuyäya
Viçvambhara said, "Listen, Nityananda. Now that he has fallen at Your lotus feet, it is proper for You to show him mercy.

TEXT 217
tomära aìgete yena kaila raktapäta tumi se ksamite pära—padila tomä'ta"
"Since he has made You bleed, only You can forgive him. And now he has fallen at Your feet."

TEXT 218
nityananda bale,—"prabhu, hi baliba muìi? vrksa-dväre krpä hara—seha çakti tuìi
Nityananda replied, "O Lord, what can I say? You have the potency to bestow mercy even through a tree.
Çréman Nityananda Prabhu said to Mahäprabhu, "When the demigods face difficulties, You protect them; when living entities like human beings are put in danger, You protect them. You also possess the power to protect plants, whose consciousness is not as developed as that of living entities like human beings."

TEXT 219-220
kona janme thäke yadi ämära sukrta saba diluì mädhäire,—çunaha niçcita
mora yata aparädha,—kichu däya näi måyä chäàa, krpä kara,—tomära mädhäi"
"I declare emphatically that if I have ever accumulated piety in any lifetime, I give it all to Mädhäi. He is relieved of any offense

committed against Me. Do not bewilder him, bestow mercy on Your Mädhäi."
Çrï Nityänanda Prabhu said, "Mädhäi has not committed any offense against Me. By creating mischief, Mädhäi has today obtained from You the piety that I have accumulated by serving You in various ways birth after birth. Therefore You have forgiven whatever offense Mädhäi has committed against Me and bestowed Your mercy on him without duplicity. So give up the illusion of deceitful dis- crimination and bestow Your causeless mercy on Mädhäi."

TEXT 221
viçvambhara bale,—"yadi ksamilå sakala mädhäire kola deha', hauka saphala"

Viçvambhara said, "If You have actually forgiven Mädhäi, then embrace him and make his life successful."

TEXT 222-223
prabhura äjìäya kaila drdha äliìgana mädhäira haila sarva bandhana-mocana
mädhäira dehe nityänanda praveçilä sarva-çakti-samanvita mädhäi hailä

On the order of the Lord, Nityänanda tightly embraced Mädhäi, who as a result was freed from all material bondage. Nityänanda entered the body of Mädhäi, and Mädhäi became filled with all energies.
By the will of the Lord, Çrï Nityänanda Prabhu lovingly embraced Mädhäi, who had attacked Him, and invested him with His own energies. On the strength of Nityänanda's energies, Mädhäi became filled with all good qualities. After becoming freed from the propensity for material enjoyment and empowered to engage in the Lord's service, they were now qualified to offer prayers with selected verses.

hema-mate u'-janete päila mocana duiijane stuti kare du'yera carana
In this way thee two were delivered, and they began to offer prayers at the lotms feet of the two Lords.
TEXT 225
prcabhu bale,—"torä ära nä karis papa" jaggäi-mädhäi bale,—"ära näre bäpa"
The Lord said, '"Do not commit further sins." Jagäi and Mädhäi replied, "Never ag:ain, O Lord."
Being overcomie with greed for material enjoyment, godless people commit warious sinful activities. The most merciful Gaurahari forbade the two rogues from committing sinful activities in the future. Jagäii and Mädhäi fully accepted the Lord's order and promised not to ccommit sinful activities again.
