Chapter Thirteen

The Deliverance of Jagai and Madhai

TEXT 101
haridäsa bale,—"ami nä pari calite jäniyä o äsi ami caìcala-sahite
Haridäsa said, "I cannot go further. Why did I knowingly come with this restless person?"
Haridäsa Thäkura said to Nityänanda Prabhu, "Even though I cannot run, I have come with a restless person like You, who can run fast and who is always getting involved in anything and every- thing."

TEXT 102
räkhilena krsna käla-yavanera thäìi caìcalera buddhye äji paräna häräi"
"Krsna just saved me from the wrath of the Yavanas, and now today I will lose my life due to Your mischievous nature."
Haridäsa said, "Just a few days ago Krsna saved me from the hands of a Yavana who was a Kazi in the province of Ämbuyä, but today I am almost certain to lose my life due to the fault of the restless intelligence of the person known as Nityänanda."

TEXT 103
nityänanda bale,—"ami nahi ye caìcala mane bhävï dekha, tomära prabhu se vihvala

Nityananda said, "I am not a restless person. Think carefully, it is your Lord who is agitated.
In protest of Haridäsa's statement, Nityananda said, "I have be- come restless by seeing how the Lord is agitated, but personally I am not restless. Mahäprabhu is a poor brähmana. Like a king He has ordered Me to preach the names of Hari at each and every house, and I am simply following His order."

TEXT 104
brähmana haiyä yena räja-äjìä hare täna-bole buli saba prati ghare ghare
"Although He is a brähmana, He gives orders like a king. On His instruction we preach door to door.

TEXT 105
hothäo ye nähi çuni,—sei äjìä täna 'cora, dhaìga' bai loha nähi bale äna
"He gives orders that we have never heard before and as a result people call us thieves and hypocrites.
Nityananda said, "I have not heard anyone give instructions like Çrï Gaurasundara has. While following His order, people considered us trespassing thieves or hypocrites in disguise."

TEXT 106
nä harile äjìä täna sarva-näça hare harile o äjìä täna ei phala dhare
"If we disobey His order we'll be ruined, and if we follow His order this is the result.

TEXT 107
äpana prabhura dosa näjänaha tumi dui jane baliläma,—doça-bhägï ami"

"You do not admit your Lord's fault. Although we both spoke to them, you accuse Me of being at fault."
"By the will of Mahäprabhu, both you and I are preaching the names of Hari at every house; but it is very sad that you accuse Me of being at fault. I am not alone at fault, Mahäprabhu is also in- volved."
TEXT 108
hena-mate dui-jane änanda-kandala dui dasyu dhäya päche dekhiyä vikala
In this way the two Prabhus engaged in blissful quarrels as they watched the two rogues chasing them become confused.

TEXT 109
dhäiyä äilä nija thäkurera bädi madyera viksepe dasyu pade radäradi
They ran towards the Lord's house, while the two rogues rolled on the ground, being intoxicated by wine.
Jagäi and Mädhäi had both drunk excessive wine before chasing Nityänanda and Haridäsa.
The word radäradi means "moving quickly" or "running about."

TEXT 110
dekhä nä päiyä dui madyapa rahila çese hudähudi dui-janei bäjila
Unable to see the two Prabhus, the drunkards gave up the chase and eventually began to push and shove each other.

TEXT 111
madyera viksepe dui kichu näjänila ächila vä kon sthäne, kothä vä rahila?
Being intoxicated by wine, the two could not remember a thing about where they were before and where they were now.

kata-ksane dui prabhu ulatiyä cäya kothä gela dui dasyu dehhite nä päya

After a while the two Prabhus looked back and could not see where the two rogues had gone.

TEXT 113
sthira haï dui jane koläkuli kare häsiyä caülä yatkä prabhu viçvambhare

The two felt pacified and embraced each other. They laughed and then went to see Viçvambhara.

TEXT 114
vasiyäche mahäprabhu kamala-locana sarvänga-sundara rüpa madana-mohana

The lotus-eyed Mahäprabhu was sitting. The limbs of His body were so beautiful that His form bewildered even Cupid.

TEXT 115
caturdihe rahiyäche vaisnava-mandala anyo'nye krsna-kathä kahena sakala

He was surrounded by the Vaisnavas, who were discussing topics of Krsna amongst themselves.

TEXT 116
kahena äpana-tattva sabhä-madhye range çvetadvipa-pati yena sanakädi-saìge
The Lord joyfully discussed His own glories in that assembly just as the Lord of Çvetadvïpa did in the association of sages headed by Sanaka.

nityänanda haridäsa henai samaya divasa-vrttänta yata sammukhe kahaya
At that time Nityänanda and Haridäsa came before the Lord and reported to Him what had happened that day.

TEXT 118
"aparüpa dekhiläma äji dui-jana
parama madyapa, punah baläya brähmana
"Today we have seen two strange persons—they were great drunkards yet they called themselves brähmanas.     <

TEXT 119
bhälare balila tare—'bala krsna-näma' khedädiyä änileka, bhägye rahe präna"
"We nicely requested them to chant the names of Krsna. In response they chased us, yet we fortunately survived."

TEXT 120
prabhu bale,—"ke se dui, kibä tära näma? brähmana haiyä kene kare hena käma?"
The Lord said, "Who are those two? What are their names? Why would brähmanas engage in such activities?"
Mahäprabhu said, "It is not proper for brähmanas to drink wine. It is not the duty of brähmanas to act like rogues and chase
Vaisnavas."

TEXT 121
sammukhe ächilä gaìgädäsa çréniväsa kahaye yateka tära vikai-ma-prakäça
Gangädäsa and Çréväsa, who were sitting before the Lord, began to relate the sinful activities of those two.

"se-duira näma prabhu—'jagäi-mädhäï subrähmana-putra dui—janma ei thäìi
saìga-dose se doìhära hena haila mati äjanma madirä bai äna nähi gati
"O Lord, the names of those two are Jagäi and Mädhäi. They are the sons of a pious brähmana, and they were born here. Due to bad association they have developed such mentality. They have been attached to drinking wine since their birth.
"The father of Jagäi and Mädhäi was a brähmana who engaged in his occupational duties. Due to the influence of bad association his two sons have become engaged in sinful activities like harming others and plundering wealth."

TEXT 124
se-dui'ra bhaye nadéyära loha dare hena nähi, yära ghare curi nähi hare
"Everyone in Nadia is afraid of these two. There is no house that has not been plundered by them.

TEXT 125
se-dui'ra pätaka hahite nähi thäìi äpane sakala dekha, jänaha gosäìi"
"There is no limit to their sinful activities. O Lord, You know and see everything."
