Chapter 11

The Characteristics of Nityananda

TEXT 51
tathäpiha mätra tumi sétära carana ihä bai sétä nähi dekhüe kemana

"Yet You never saw Sétä, except for her lotus feet.

In the Rämäyana, Uttara-kända (58.21) Laksmana speaks to Sétädevé as follows: "O beautiful one, what are you saying? O pious lady! I have never seen your form before, 1 have seen only your lotus
feet."

TEXT 52
tomära se bane rävanera vamça-näça se tumi ye bäté äna, kemana prakäça?

"For You who destroyed the entire family of Rävana by Your arrows, what is the glory in bringing a bowl back from a crow?

For a description of this pastime one should refer to Çrémad Bhägavatam, Ninth Canto, Chapter Ten and the Laìhä-hända of Rämäyana.

TEXT 53
yähära carane pürve hälindé äsiyä stavana harila mahä-prabhäva jäniyä

"After realizing Your power and glories, Yamunä-devé pre- viously offered prayers at Your lotus feet.

While residing at Dvärakä, Lord Baladeva once came to Vraja to meet His well-wishers. He stayed there for the two months of Caitra and Vaiçäkha (April and May). At that time Çré Baladeva drank the Väruné sent by Varuna, the predominating deity of water, and en- joyed pastimes with the gopés. Thereafter, with a desire to sport in the waters of Çré Yamuna, Çri Baladeva ordered Yamuna to come before Him. Considering Çré Baladeva intoxicated, however, she neglected His order. Then Lord Baladeva, the son of Rohiné, became angry and began to pull Yamuna with the tip of His plough. At that time Yamuna became extremely afraid, so after falling at the feet of Baladeva, she begged for His pardon by offering various prayers. (Çrémad Bhägavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter Sixty-five)

caturdaça-bhuvana-pälana-çakti yära käka-sthäne bätï äne—ki mahattva täìra?

"For He who possesses the power to maintain the fourteen worlds, what is the glory in bringing a bowl back from a crow?

TEXT 55
tathäpi tomära kärya alpa nähi haya yei kara, sei satya, cäri vede kaya"

"Still Your activities are not insignificant. Whatever You do is eternal and confirmed by the Vedas."

TEXT 56
häse nityänanda täna çuniyä stavana bälya-bhäve bale,—"muìi kariba bhojana"

After hearing Mälinï's prayers, Nityänanda smiled and in the mood of a child said, "I will eat."

TEXT 57
nityänanda dekhile tähära stanajhare bälya-bhäve nityänanda stana päna kare

As soon as Mälinï would see Nityänanda, milk would automat- ically flow from her breasts, and in the mood of a child Nityänanda would drink her milk.

TEXT 58
ei-mata acintya nityänandera carita ami ki baliba, sabajagate vidita

Such are the inconceivable characteristics of Nityänanda. What more can I say? They are already known throughout the world.

karaye durjìeya karma, alaukika yena ye jänaye tattva, se mänaye satya hena

His activities are extraordinary and incomprehensible. Anyone who actually knows Him accepts His pastimes as true.

TEXT 60
aharniça bhäxäveçe parama uddäma sarva-nadlyäya hide jyotir-maya-dhäma

Absorbed in transcendental ecstasy, the most effulgent Nityananda wandered day and night throughout Nadia.

TEXT 61
kibä yogi nityananda, kibä tattva-jìänï yähära ye-mata icchä, nä balaye keni

Some say that Lord Nityananda is a great yogi, while some say He is a great philosopher. Others may say whatever they desire, and why should they not say so?

TEXT 62
ye se kene nityänanda-caitanyera nahe tabu se carana mora rahuka hrdaye

Whatever relationship Nityananda may have with Lord Caitanya, I still keep His lotus feet within my heart.

TEXT 63
eta parihäre o ye päpé nindä kare tabe lathi märoì tära çirera upare

If in spite of hearing the glories of Nityananda, one blasphemes Him, then I kick the head of such a sinful person.

ei-mata ache prabhu çréväsera ghare niravadhi äpane gauräìga raksä kare
In this way Nityänanda Prabhu resided in the house of Çréväsa. Lord Gauräriga constantly protected Him.

TEXT 65
eka-dina nija-grhe prabhu viçvambhara vasï ache laksmé-saìge parama-sundara
One day the most enchanting Lord Viçvambhara was sitting in. His house with Laksmé at His side.
Here the word laksmé refers to Visnupriyä.

TEXT 66
yogäya tämbüla laksmé parama harise prabhura änande nä jänaye rätri-diçe
Laksmé was offering betel nuts to the Lord in great happiness, and the Lord was so pleased that He did not know whether it was day or night.
The word diçe means "the directions such as northeast" or "infor- mation." Therefore the phrase rätri-diçe means "knowledge of night."

TEXT 67
yakhana thäkaye laksmé-saìge viçvambhara çacéra cittete haya änanda vistara
Whenever Viçvambhara enjoyed pastimes with Laksmé, mother Çacé felt great happiness in her heart.

TEXT 68
may era cittera sukha thäkura jäniyä laksmìra saìgete prabhu thäkena vasiyä

Knowing that this made His mother happy, the Lord spent time in the company of Laksmé.

TEXT 69
hena-kàle nityananda änanda-vihvala äilä prabhura hädé parama caìcala
At that time the most restless Nityananda came to the Lord's house overwhelmed in ecstasy.

TEXT 70
bälya-bhäve digambara rahilä dändäiyä kähäre nä hare läja paränanda päiyä
He stood there in the mood of a child without any clothes on. He was so absorbed in ecstasy that He did not feel shy before anyone.

TEXT 71
prabhu bale,—"nityananda, kene digambara?" nityananda 'haya haya' karaye uttara
The Lord said to Him, "O Nityananda, why don't You have any clothes on?" Nityananda replied, "Yes. Yes."

TEXT 72
prabhu bale,—"nityananda, paraha' vasana" nityananda bale,—"äji ämära gamana"
The Lord said, "Nityananda, put on Your cloth." Nityananda replied, "Today I will go."

TEXT 73
prabhu bale,—"nityananda, ihä kene karì?" nitäi balena,—"ära khäite nä pari"
The Lord asked, "Nityananda, why do You act like this?" Nityananda replied, "I cannot eat any more."

prabhu bale,—"eka hahi, kaha kene ära?" nitäi balena,—"ami genu daça-bära"
The Lord then inquired, "When I ask You something, why do You reply something else?" Nityananda replied, "I went there ten times."

TEXT 75
kruddha haìä bale prabhu,—"mora dosa näìi" nityananda bale,—"prabhu, ethä nähi äi"
In an angry mood, the Lord said, "I have no fault." Nityananda replied, "Mother Çacé is not here."
